This is the story about two children, Lina and David, and their search for the perfect gift for their father.
One day, Lina and David were talking about memories of birthdays that they had in the past, and how Dad had always worked so hard to make sure that they really enjoyed their special day, and that it was memorable. They suddenly realized that Dad’s birthday was 2 weeks away. They started discussing about what they could so for him to help repay him back a little for all of the things that he had done for them. They were trying to come up with something that he would really enjoy doing, but they couldn’t figure out anything that they could afford with the saved up allowances.
Lina and David finally decided that trips were too expensive, taking him out to eat was too temporary, so they finally decided on getting him a gift. But what could they get their father that he didn’t already have? So, the search began.
Everyday, they two loving children went out after school and looked in the shops nearby. They looked at umbrellas, but decided those were too insignificant. They looked at cars, but readily agreed that those were way out of their reach. They looked at tire swings, but knew that they would be of no use since they did not have any trees. They looked and looked in stores, but had such a hard time deciding what their dad would love that they could afford.
Lina and David decided to ask their neighbor, Mr. Springer, his advice on the perfect gift for their dad. He said he wasn’t sure but told them to check the newspapers for ads and sales that might interest them. Every morning, they ran to get the paper and look through all of the classifieds and all of the ads. They were unable to find anything, and it was only 3 days until their dad’s birthday.
The children anxiously looked through the paper that morning and saw a full-page advertisement for a . They had seen the Coleman roadtrip lxe grill in stores and knew that their dad would love it, but it had always been too expensive. However, on sale, the price was only fifteen dollars less than they had saved up.
Lina and David decided that the Coleman roadtrip lxe grill was the perfect gift for their father, but they had to get fifteen dollars somehow before then. The children thought and thought of how to get the money, and finally came up with an idea- they would find aluminum cans and cash them in. The kids went out for the rest of that day and searched for cans. They were able to collect two trash bags full, but that was only exchanged for five dollars- they were still ten dollars short. They decided that they need help, so they called their friends Janice and Jamie and explained the situation.
The four children went out and picked up so many cans. When they were done, they cashed them in and received fourteen dollars- four dollars extra. Lina and David gave the extra four dollars to their friends in appreciation for helping them out, and hurriedly bought their father’s gift- the Coleman roadtrip lxe grill.
When they arrived home, they wrapped the gift and anxiously anticipated their father’s birthday. When it came, he was so excited and amazed at his Coleman roadtrip lxe grill, and at his two loving children.
